# COMBIN Excel Formula

Microsoft Excel features lots of functions from the simple ones up to the complex functions that are useful in different fields like business, finance, accounting, engineering, science, mathematics and many more. This software program can make your life easier especially when you are working with complex tasks.

Let’s say that you want to obtain the number of combination of a given set of objects. You may ask if there is a function in Excel that has the ability to do that right? There is the so-called COMBIN function in Microsoft Excel that is capable of doing that job. This article will provide you an overview of this function and some examples, so it will be easier for you to learn the usage of the COMBIN function.

**Overview of the COMBIN Function in Microsoft Excel**

The COMBIN function in Microsoft Excel is use to compute for the number of combinations of a supplied number object, from a given set. You have to keep in mind that combinations are not similar to permutations because in permutations, the order of the select number objects is counted. The formula of the COMBIN function is:

**COMBIN(number, number_chosen)**

**The arguments in this formula are the following:**

- Number – This is a required argument it refers to the number of objects in the given set.
- Number_chosen –This is a required argument and it refers to the number of objects to be chosen from the given set.

You have to take note that if any of the arguments are supplied as decimal values, they will be converted to integers.

Here is an example for a better understanding about the usage of the COMBIN function. Take for instance that you have 6 objects, these are the following: a, b, c, d, e, f. You can have 15 different combinations of 2 objects and they are the following: ef, df, de, cf, ce, cd, bf, be, bd, bc, af, ae, ad, ac, ab.

- You can compute for this number of combinations by using the COMBIN function in Excel. Type in this formula in any cell where you want the result to display, =COMBIN(6, 2). Then the function will return the result which is 15.
- If you want to compute for the number of combinations of 3 objects, type in this formula in any cell, =COMBIN(6, 3). The function will return the result which is 20.
- Enter this formula in any cell if you want to compute for the number of combination of 4 objects, =COMBIN(6, 4). The function will return the result which is 15.
- Here’s another one, type in this formula if you want to calculate for the number of combinations of 5 objects, =COMBIN(6, 5). The function will return the result which is 6.
- Finally, enter this formula if you want to calculate for the number of combinations of 6 objects, =COMBIN(6,6). The Excel function will return the result which is 1.

**Common Errors in COMBIN Function**

The #VALUE! error value is displayed if either the supplied number arguments is less than zero or the supplied number_chosen arguments is greater than the number argument or is less than zero.

The #VALUE! error value is also displayed if either of the supplied arguments are not numeric values.
