IMLOG10 Excel Formula

There are a lot of Engineering Functions in Excel that are very useful. One of this is the IMLOG10 function which returns the base 10 of a logarithm of a supplied complex number. The argument of the function is IMLOG10( inumber ) wherein the inumber is represented by a complex number.

If in trying the function the #NAME? Error will occur, this means that you will be needing to enable the Analysis ToolPak. For Excel 2007 and Excel 2010, you can enable this by selecting the Excel Options button on your spreadsheet. Next, on the menu select the Add-Ins and the Manage box will appear. On the box select the Excel Add-Ins and click Go. The Add-Ins window will appear and from the window select the Analysis and ToolPak and hit OK.

For Excel 2003, select form the Tools drop-down list the Add-Ins option. The Add-Ins window will pop up and on the list select the Analysis ToolPak options and hit OK.

After enabling the Analysis ToolPak also take note that in the Excel complex numbers are already stored. Therefore, if in a text string is supplied in a format of “a+bi” it is then interpreted as a complex number. Simple numeric values are also accepted as complex number functions because it imaginary coefficient is also zero.

The inumber in the function IMLOG10( inumber ) can be in the form of a simple number and a complex number enclosed in quotation marks. Also, the inumber can be a reference cell which contains  a number or a complex number. It can also be a number returned from a function or formula in Excel.

Open an Excel spreadsheet and enable the Analysis ToolPak. After doing so, on cell A1 enter the following function =IMLOG10(2) and the results will be 0.301029995663981. For a source cell, enter the inumber in cell A2 which is 2.5-i and enter the function =IMLOG10(A3) in cell B3, the results would be 0.430169003285497-0.165251819908898i.

If the error #VALUE! Appears in the cell this means that the inputted inumber is now a know imaginary number or real number.
