Microsoft Excel is a software application used for the manipulation, calculation, and organization of data. This is a spreadsheet software program for Macintosh and Windows computers. It is also part of the office suite for Microsoft including other efficient programs like PowerPoint and Word. Microsoft Excel also creates date workbook files through default. Sheet is the other term for one spreadsheet or worksheet in Excel workbook. The worksheet or spreadsheet is a grid or table composed of columns and rows making it convenient to calculate, enter, organize and consolidate data. Excel supplied multiple link sheets and layered graphical interface with a mouse even though, Lotus 123 and VisiCalc bring in the concept of worksheet or spreadsheet in the computers.

The first version of Microsoft Excel was released in 1985 for Macintosh. In 1987, Microsoft introduced Windows 3.0 and Excel was available to this software. Since then, Microsoft supported the software platforms together. The Microsoft updates were released every two consecutive years. The popular programs for spreadsheet include the Lotus 123 IBM for windows and for Mac, and the spreadsheet AppleWorks program. Nevertheless, Microsoft Excel led the worksheet market for innumerable years and still continuing to be the most outstanding and popular worksheet program of both consumers and businesses.

Microsoft Excel has also built-in formulas allowing the calculations to be easy and fast. Excel formulas are used for accounting, financials, times and dates and more. Several of the formulas are complex if it is calculated manually although it can be done through Excel spreadsheet. Thus, you can also link some of the formulas across the workbooks and worksheets. Analysis of data can also be executed in Microsoft Excel.

Charts are used to create data that are entered and calculated in Excel. The chart types include the following: bar, line, pie charts, column and many more. Excel also permits the cell formatting to format numbers, print formatting and conditional formatting based on the results of calculation. Microsoft Excel has developer section that allows the user to create Macros. Excel is also used in advanced programming with Visual Basic.

The Advantages of Using Microsoft Excel in Businesses are:

  • Efficiency – the user needs to enter only variables, values and formulas to the worksheet for the results of calculation.
  • Integrity – this is to specify the cell format to display all entries consistently.
  • Charting – it creates numerical information that are comprehensible through presenting the cells as graphics.
  • Formatting – it tackles the color and appearance of the spreadsheet lying through the total control of the user.
  • Security – it can secure sensitive Excel data from the curious eyes through using passwords with the correct code of the user.

The benefits of worksheet or spreadsheet in Excel allow the user to import, create, report and analyze large amounts of data accurately and quickly. In Excel 2007, it supports individual spreadsheets for over one million rows with 16,000 columns that feature arrays of statistical, engineering, financial and arithmetic functions. Excel Spreadsheets also support graphics and charts that facilitate communication, collaboration and analysis of sets of diverse data. These are the lists of the mathematical operators commonly used in Microsoft Excel. All of these Excel operators are required to be entered within the formula that is calculated between each cell.

In Excel spreadsheets, there are many formulas and functions that you need to study and analyze. One of the functions that you have to learn is the Phonetic function.

Phonetic Function Defined:

Phonetic function in Microsoft Excel is used in extracting the phonetic or furigana character from the single text string. It is under the time or text function of the Microsoft Excel.

Function of Phonetic in Excel:

All data of Phonetic is stored and imported in the Rich string members or the alignment and font phonetic settings. To finalize the setting, the rich strings need to be processed. This is possible to obtain the appropriate UNO interface needed in setting the information of phonetic from its XText. Whenever you can’t display or calculate through Calc, then the function will do initial markings to determine the defect since breaks were imported from Excel.

The Phonetic Reference:

The syntax for Phonetic function in Excel is “PHONETIC(reference)”. The reference argument is the reference or text string to one cell or array of cells containing a furigana or phonetic text string.

Remarks:

  • If the “reference” has the array of cells, the text string of furigana within the corner upper-left of the array returned.
  • If the “reference” is the arrays of nonadjacent cells then value of #N/A is returned.
