# LOGINV Excel Formula

One of the significant functions in Microsoft Excel is the LOGINV function. The LOGINV function is known to be the inverse function of the LOGNORMDIST(x,mu,sigma). This inverse function returns the said probability, which the Lognormally distributed the random variable having the parameter sigma and mu that is equal or less than the value of x. If the said x value is known to be the random variable having this distribution, LN(x) has the normal distribution with the mean of mu as well as the sigma’s standard deviation.

The LOGINV function found in Microsoft Excel returns the x value for which LOGNORMDIST returns p. Therefore, it is considered that LOGINV is evaluated through the search process which returns the appropriate x value. Moreover, the connection between NORMSINV and LOGINV is exploited in searching for the exact NORMSINV, which converts the result to the LOGINV result. The syntax of the LOGINV function is “LOGINV(p, mu, Sigma)”. Wherein “p” is the probability of 0<p<1, and wherein sigma and mu are considered the Lognormal distribution’s numeric parameters. With regards to this, sigma represents the standard deviation; however, it must be strictly positive.

Therefore, LOGINV statistical function of Microsoft Excel returns the inverse of “lognormal cumulative distribution” of the x function in which In(x) is normally distributed with standard_dev and mean parameters. If “p = LOGNORMDIST(x,….)” the LOGINV(p,..) is equal to x. However, the use of the lognormal distribution is to analyze the transformed data logarithmically. Basically, the syntax for the LOGINV function is “LOGINV(probability,mean,standard_dev)”.

The Probability is associated with the said lognormal distribution. In addition, mean is known to be the mean of In(x). The “standard_dev” is considered the In(x) standard deviation.

**REMARKS**

- If any of the argument is considered as a non-numeric value, then LOGINV returns the error value of #VALUE!.
- If the probability >1 or the probability <0, the function LOGINV returns the error value #NUM!.
- If the standard_dev is less than or equal to zero, the function LOGINV gives back the #NUM! error value.

Numerous functions been enhanced, which suits Microsoft Excel 2003 including the later versions of Excel, which is only for the search process refining. These inverse function sets are CHINV, FINV, BETAINV, TINV and GAMMAINV. Moreover, for some respective functions, there are no modifications made, and these include the CHIDIST, GAMMADIST, TDIST and BETADIST.

Moreover, Excel 2003 and the later versions of Excel have improved NORMSDIST’s accuracy, which is also known as the NORMSINV. In addition, the changes that affect LOGINV and NORMINV are called as the NORMSINV and the LOGNORMDIST and NORMDIST is called NORMSDIST.
